From the runway to your closet
Tory's chill layers, your opinion on the SS24 runway and denim from the FW23 runway. Plus, a legend in the world of interiors.
The dust has settled on the Spring/Summer 2024 collections. Now, to assess. We loved the shades of brown Tory wore to our show. Her wide-leg camel pants were featured in the fall campaign with a slouchy red sweater, but there’s something about the mix of tonal textures (a chocolate fine rib knit, tan stamped croc belt) that feel especially sophisticated and wearable. Is this the sartorial answer to “latte makeup”? Only TikTok will tell.
The spring collection was beautiful. Softly futuristic with clean curving lines, featherweight materials and romantic details — Grecian micro-pleating, embroidery with tiny bells. These are a few of our favorite looks below. Hailey Bieber already cast her vote for the pink dress. Tell us which look(s) you’re still thinking about.
SPOTLIGHT ON: ROBERT KIME
The personal collection of late English decorator Robert Kime went on auction last week in London. The sale is over, but the catalogue is available online. You can leaf through Kime’s exquisite yet thoroughly un-precious interiors and his many eclectic objets.
Tory first met Kime, the consummate gentleman, when they worked together on her home in Normandy. They then collaborated on a collection of patterned indigo textiles inspired by their trip to Japan in 2019. Their Nara Collection debuted in 2020, and its second collection launches this week. Both collections will be available at Robert Kime (London), Chelsea Textiles (New York), Jasper (Los Angeles), Ainsworth-Noah (Atlanta) and Wells Abbott (Dallas).
THE SHARPER SIDE OF FADED DENIM
If there’s a universal beloved fashion item, it’s jeans. In all its incarnations. Cut-offs, mini skirts, jackets, overalls… On our Spring/Summer 2023 runway, a beautiful pair of high-waisted, faded jeans sparked a small fervor, paired with a simple black silk tunic.
Tory followed up in Fall/Winter 2023 with a light wash denim skirt. Inspired her own high-school denim hack, it looked like a pair of well-worn jeans were converted into a skirt.
In case you’re curious, that DIY trend dates back to the ’70s. Longtime New Yorker fashion writer and essayist Kennedy Fraser wrote in 1973 that skirts made from old blue jeans “had a considerable vogue this summer in the most expensive resorts.”
But denim is as much about how it’s worn as the piece itself. What we loved on the fall runway was the styling. The chic juxtaposition of the raw-hemmed skirt with exquisitely polished riding boots, a perfect flannel peacoat trimmed with fur and a ladylike top-handle bag. (Side note: This is a really good peacoat with a removable shearling collar — 5 Things You Should Buy did a great deep dive.)
The denim skirt can be styled any which way. Think fine knits and good tailoring, finished with a smart bag and shoes, whether a classic loafer, elegant slingbacks or a knee boot. All pieces you probably already have in your closet.
EVERYTHING + NOTHING: THE TORY SPORT FLEECE VEST
A recurring feature on WSIW where we uncover a fantastic but under-the-radar item we in-house editors are obsessed with. This month, it’s our Tory Sport fleece vest. We’d go so far as to say everyone at HQ has at least one. The fleece is so soft, you’d want to sleep on it, and it can be styled casually on its own with jeans or as a cozy layer under a trench or tailored overcoat. It has multiple zipped pockets and bright nylon climbing rope pulls, and this season, it comes in 6 colors. We’re waffling between the mustard yellow and dark olive. Tell us your favorite.
